Clinical depression (also known as depressive disorder, major depression, or clinical depression) is a medical condition that manifests as feelings of sadness and a loss of interest in activities that you previously enjoyed. The Task Force recommends two types of counseling to prevent depression in women who are at high risk of developing it:

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of therapy in treating depression during pregnancy in which the patient thinks about his or her thoughts and feelings (also called CBT). CBT assists you in coping with negative thoughts by altering the way you think and behave. CBT is a type of therapy in which you work with a therapist to help you set goals and identify negative thoughts and behaviors so that you can begin to think and act in a more positive manner.

Counseling in a social setting (also called IPT). When it comes to your personal life, IPT can help you identify and deal with conditions and problems such as relationships with your partner and family, situations at work or in your neighborhood, having a medical condition, or losing a loved one, among other things. IPT includes a variety of activities such as role-playing with a therapist, answering open-ended questions (rather than yes or no questions), and paying close attention to how you make decisions and communicate with others.

If you are at increased risk for depression, your healthcare provider can assist you in receiving treatment with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT). Communicate openly with your healthcare provider about your life, your pregnancy, and your feelings so that your healthcare provider can assist you in finding counseling services.


Pregnancy-related complications such as miscarriage, low birth weight, premature birth, birth defects (including heart defects), or a lung condition known as persistent pulmonary hypertension have been linked to certain antidepressants, according to some research (also called PPHN) and so thus mental therapy could be the best option for treating depression during pregnancy.
