Every one out of 10 women suffers from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is a hormonal disorder mainly faced by women of reproductive age. Although, there is no specific age group of women suffering from this disease, the chances of suffering from PCOS are the same for an 11-year-old girl as it is for a 40-year-old woman. The main problem here is not having PCOS but the fact that most of the women remain un diagnosed, which means they do not understand they are suffering from a disease that needs to be treated. Today, we will discuss the different PCOS symptoms that will help alert you as to whether you have the condition or not.
PCOS Symptoms To Be Aware Of
Increased androgen levels lead to common PCOS symptoms such as irregular periods, painful acne breakouts, excess body weight, unwanted hair growth. Let’s study these symptoms.
1. Irregular Periods
It isn’t necessary that women with PCOS experience irregularity in periods. But it is one of the main symptoms of PCOS. Irregular periods refer to the excessive delay of periods is over 35 days. Or even once in 4 months. It can also lead to very heavy and uncontrollable bleeding. Abnormal cells build up inside the womb when there are long gaps between periods.
2. Acne Issue
Acne is a very common skin problem faced by almost every individual, but excessive acne could be one symptom of PCOS. PCOS leads to increased sebum production, which can cause acne breakouts. So, if you are suffering from continuous painful breakouts, it’s time to get diagnosed.
3. Mood Swings
Mood swings are mostly experienced by women during menstruation. But excessive mood swings can be a sign that you have PCOS. Mood swings refer to the unaccountable change in the mood of an individual. Anger, sadness, irritation all at once or after a certain time gap can be a signal. Hence, keep a check on the way you behave, as that is an important symptom of PCOS, too.
4. Uncontrollable Weight Gain
People often ignore this sign. Weight gain is natural but when it exceeds a certain limit, it can be disastrous. Increased weight is a major sign of PCOS. The weight gain is mostly seen in the abdomen because it is triggered by the male hormone. Hence, women with PCOS have an apple shape rather than a pear.
5. Unwanted Hair Growth
Hirsutism or excessive hair growth in women is due to the increased androgen levels in the body secreted by the ovaries. Unwanted hair growth can be because of heredity but when this is combined with menstrual irregularity, then you might suffer from PCOS.
If you notice any of these symptoms, then you should get a proper diagnosis. It’s easy to ignore but it can be harmful to you in the long run. It’s better to take action as early as you can. Get to know your body better. If you see something that is similar to the PCOS symptoms mentioned above, get tested as early as possible. If it’s PCOS, then at least you can start doing the right things to improve the symptoms.
